Why is pride such a bad thing?

You're exactly right. Pride makes us all better, and helps us do more for everyone around us. Some religions discourage it because too many people with self-respect will start questioning the bullshlt they're expected to take without any explanation. That could spell disaster for the fearmongers who want to keep people dumb.
