Why was it 'Alvin and the Chpimunks' when Simon was clearly the more dominant rodent?

There is little doubt among existing cartoon scholars that Alvin of 'Alvin and the Chipmunks' fame was the alpha male of the trio. Yet Simon consistently challenges Alvin's intelligence, decision making skills and his ability to lead the three of them. Overwhelming intellectual prowess and sound rational judgement characterise Simon. His height left him towering over both Alvin and Theodore and yet, he is widely regarded as playing second fiddle to Alvin. Clearly Theodore, the overweight, short and mentally challenged chipmunk was never a contender for the alpha male position. But why should the annoying, reckless and sporty chipmunk have his name in lights, when clearly Simon is a much better candidate?
